Born at his family’s 18-room motel in Arkansas. Today, Ravi Patel leads a nationally recognized hospitality platform, invests across public and private markets, and teaches the next generation of entrepreneurs—all from Iowa.
Ravi Patel was born in 1985 above the 18-room motel his parents owned and operated in Mena, Arkansas. After immigrating from India, his parents built their life through hospitality—living where they worked and handling nearly every part of the business themselves.
The family later settled in Burlington, Iowa, where Ravi grew up inside the hotel business. He learned early that ownership meant responsibility: no task was beneath you, reputation mattered, and every detail counted.
After graduating from the University of Iowa, Ravi became president of Hawkeye Hotels. He helped build the family business into a nationally recognized hotel ownership, development, and management platform.
Hawkeye Hotels has participated in more than 100 developments and acquisitions and more than $3 billion in transaction activity. It remains privately owned and family led.

In 2013, Ravi co-founded Built By Iowa to back ambitious founders with a meaningful connection to Iowa.
Built By Iowa has invested in more than 25 startups based on a simple belief: world-class companies can be built from Iowa when ambitious founders have capital, conviction, and experienced operators in their corner.
Through Patel Investments, Ravi brings an operator’s mindset to public markets—combining long-term ownership with an event-driven strategy built to act when markets dislocate.
Ravi teaches Management and Entrepreneurship at the University of Iowa.
His classes focus on the realities behind building: making decisions under uncertainty, leading under pressure, understanding incentives, allocating capital, and managing the inner demands of ambition.
The classroom combines real-world lessons with candid conversations featuring founders, investors, athletes, artists, and public leaders.
Ravi’s work has taken him across the country, but Iowa remains home.
It is where his parents built their lives, where he grew up, where Hawkeye Hotels took shape, where he attended college, and where he is raising his family.
Remaining in Iowa has been a deliberate choice. Ravi believes ambitious people should not have to leave the places that shaped them to build consequential companies or pursue meaningful opportunities.
That conviction has shaped his work in business, investing, education, mentorship, and public life.
In 2015, Ravi entered the race for United States Congress in Iowa’s 1st District. Though he ultimately stepped away from the campaign, the experience deepened his understanding of public policy and civic responsibility.
Ravi believes greater responsibility demands deeper self-awareness. He continues that work through communities that challenge how he leads, builds, relates, and defines success.
